Tennis Attire Goes High Fashion! Adidas by Stella McCartney 2011 Collection Review

Ask Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki who she is wearing and she will enthusiastically reply, “Stella McCartney!”  Oddly enough, she’s not talking about her gown for a ritzy, off-court gala.  Rather, it is her tennis attire sporting the prestigious McCartney label.  Sir Paul’s gifted daughter is lending her name and design talent to sports wear, and Wozniacki is the happy recipient of stylish and well-made apparel springing from an Adidas and McCartney marriage.

Said to meld the “grace of ballet with the rigors of sport,” the Adidas by Stella McCartney Tennis Ballerina Performance Dress ($120) was worn by Caroline Wozniacki at the 2011 Australian Open.

CLIMALITE FABRIC wicks perspiration away from the body!

While the dress appears to be highly comfortable and cool with its moisture-wicking fabric, it is not entirely flattering.  Wozniacki is not anywhere near heavy, but appears so in this high waist, pleated faux-skirt.

Much more attractive is The Body-Conscious Adidas by Stella McCartney Tennis Ruffle Dress ($120), worn by Wozniacki at the Sony Ericsson Open and BNP Paribas Open.

This well-cut dress clings to the body in all the right places, and the rich blue color better complements a fair skin tone than does an all-white dress.   While adding a degree of “glam,” the ruffles look like they could be distracting, but with her high level of play, Wozniacki put the kibosh on this theory.

Ms. McCartney has also designed a few separates for her Adidas line:
For tennis…really??
Looks uber comfortable!

While the ruffled tank is ultra chic, only a select group of fairly thin women can pull off the nearly sheer, baby-doll style. Frankly, this tank looks more appropriate for afternoon tea than for a gritty game of tennis. We prefer the more relaxed Tennis Performance Tank. The twisted, double layered fabric at the bottom edge adds a bit of style while maintaining a sporty vibe – perfect for the stylish yet hard-core athlete! We also love the polo, skirt and shorts – comfortable and classic!

Finally, we have the Adidas by Stella McCartney Tennis Performance Short Sleeve Jacket in white and blue (also available in long sleeves) - a 1980’s inspired zip-up - featuring kangaroo pockets and a chunky collar with a flap closure.  While it is a cute jacket, it does have its limitations – first of all, the price at $175.  Also, an elastic waist is not necessarily flattering to the figure.

Overall, we like the look of the obviously well-made Adidas by Stella McCartney Collection, and Ms. Wozniacki is a charming human mannequin.  However, not every woman can wear this shade of blue and white – we would like to see a few more color choices!  Also, the recreational tennis aficionado may find these pieces a bit pricey, ranging from $75 for a tank up to $225 for the bag.
