Wear This, Not That French Open Edition: Adidas - 2012

There is an art to choosing attractive tennis clothing, especially if playing on rich, red clay! While cut is ALWAYS an important element to good style, there are a few other factors to consider in the selection of a fabulous French Open outfit:

1. Color – After all this time, why can’t some top-seeded players realize that they are being photographed…a LOT! Many continue to choose colors that clash with the clay like bright purples and pinks. The BEST bet for the burnt-orange surface is a complementary sky blue or a light shade of aqua, but make sure to break them up with a neutral short or skirt fashioned in gray or navy blue.

2. Comfort – If a player can’t freely move about the court, the outfit sort of defeats the purpose…literally!

3. Temperature – There is a reason why Bethanie Mattek-Sands is the only player to wear knee socks – they’re HOT (and we don’t mean good-looking). Players should choose clothing that is made to keep the body cool on court.

4. Accessories – Often deemed the best (or in some cases the worst) part of an outfit, accessories can take tennis style from “O. K.” to “OUTSTANDING!”

With all this in mind, here are our recommendations for 2012 French Open Fashion – the Adidas Battle.
WEAR THIS
NOT THAT
This is a no-brainer. While these outfits are very similar, the lines of Miss Ivanovic’s dress are much cleaner and more flattering to the figure.

WEAR THIS
 NOT THAT
Here it is all about the color. Mr. Simon’s color choices (left) are spot on – pale blue with neutral navy and accents that are just a glimmer more orange than the player on the right. Well-played!

Wear This, Not That! 2012 Australian Open Fashion

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!!! It’s that time again kids – the Australian Open. For some tennis aficionados, it is the BEST time of the year – the start of another Grand Slam season! While we are sure that you are enjoying the action-packed matches, there’s no doubt you have been waiting with baited breath for this year’s Trendy Tennis “Wear This, NOT That – Aussie Open” post! So, without further ado…

WEAR THIS
We LOVE Del Potro’s relaxed (yet put together) style! He always exhibits just the right amount of color paired with neutrals (typically navy) and a touch of bright white. Check out Day 9 of our Aussie Open 2012 Tennis Fashion Review to see how to create Del Potro's Australian Open 2012 look.

NOT THAT
Verdasco usually ROCKS the color, but this time he went just a little too far! It’s a good thing he’s out early…we’re not sure our retinas could have taken another match!

 WEAR THIS
Speaking of color…Ms. McCartney has done a wonderful job designing this Performance Tennis Dress – she thinks about skin tone, color (look how beautiful it pairs with the court blue and Miss Wozniacki’s complexion), and fabric – this design features beautiful textural detail.

 NOT THAT
Yikes…where to start? This too-bright shade of yellow rarely complements any skin tone, and the accent color clashes with the darker blue courts!

 WEAR THIS
If you need something to keep those nasty beads of sweat from your peepers, we love a visor – this one beautifully accents the outfit, and it shields Miss Kirilenko’s eyes from harmful UV rays!

 NOT THAT
Doesn’t Miss Kvitova read Wear This NOT That?? We keep finding her in these unattractive headbands with tails – for goodness sake!
P. S. Shoulders back, Petra…but we digress.

 WEAR THIS
If you MUST wear a headband, choose one like Serena is wearing here – wide, with a colorful accenting pattern SANS tails!

Wear This, Not That! 2011 US Open Fashion

From the unexpected rise of Donald Young to the comeback win of Caroline Wozniacki (down 7-6, 4-1 to Svetlana Kuznetsova) to the crazy rain delays – the 2011 U. S. Open certainly hasn’t been without excitement. That goes for fashion as well. Many styles have been a joy for the gawking and some, well… not so great. Behold – our “wear this, not that” analysis of this year’s styles at the Open.

WOMEN'S "BIG BRAND" DRESSES

WEAR THIS…
NOT THAT!
Maria Sharapova Maria Sharapova of Russia celebrates after defeating Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus during Day Three of the 2011 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 31, 2011 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.
Caroline Wozniacki Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark reacts against Vania King of the United States during Day Six of the 2011 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 3, 2011 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.
Two blonds in mega-sponsor, “made for them” tennis dresses with very different results: While Caroline’s Stella McCartney for Adidas tennis dress is well-cut and stylish - it is virtually devoid of color, giving her a pale, translucent, unremarkable complexion. Both Maria’s daytime and nighttime dresses sport contrasting details and snippets of color, making them a far more interesting and complementary choice for a blond. Note to Miss W. – Just a little color goes a long way!

WOMEN'S SEPARATES

Julia Goerges Julia Goerges of Germany serves against Shuai Peng of China during Day Five of the 2011 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 2, 2011 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.

 WEAR THIS…
And then there are two not-so-sponsored brunettes. Julia Georges of Germany shows us that you can still look very fashionable on court, even without a “made for you” look. She is cute and coordinated in this comfortable-looking outfit which is identical to Petra Kvitova’s (except for the stylish visor vs. a not-so-attractive headband).

Christina Mchale - 2011 US Open - Day 5

 NOT THAT!
We love these bright pink and orange hues on brunettes – they can really bring out a darker skin tone, however in the case of Christina McHale of the U. S., there is just a little too much of a good thing – we strongly recommend a crisp, white top – perfecto!

All in all the styles at the Open this year were for the most part, tasteful (which is why the men have been left out of commentary completely), but we feel compelled to make one last observation.

Love of country is terrific, but there is something to be said for a little discretion, as in these “NOT THAT” photos!! Louk Sorensen (left) is from – you guessed it – Ireland. And we bet you can guess who these legs belong to and what country Ms. Mattek –Sands is from….yikes!

 NOT THAT!
Louk Sorensen of Ireland serves against Rogerio Dutra Da Silva of Brazil during Day Three of the 2011 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 31, 2011 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States stands on the court during her doubles match with Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia against Jelena Dokic of Australia and Virginie Razzano of France during Day Three of the 2011 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 31, 2011 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.
