Fashion Battles: 2012 U.S. Open Tennis

The last Grand Slam of a very long season – due to the extra excitement of Olympic tennis – leaves us feeling bittersweet to say the least. The retirement of Kim Clijsters and Andy Roddick will certainly give us less to dish about when it comes to tennis fashion. And there are other reasons we will miss these two memorable phenoms.

In addition to the Aussies, Americans too have adopted “our Kim” as one of our own – we have enjoyed her winning personality and amazing on-court flexibility. And Mister Roddick? Well, in spite of ourselves sometimes, we enjoy his feisty attitude and sharp wit, not to mention that serve…we will miss that serve!

That said, let’s get back to fashion… Bold color seems to be the trend at this year’s open with a favorite being bright pink! With a host of bright colors and patterns, we thought we would make a few comparisons for your amusement. Presenting…

Lacoste vs. Lacoste
Tobias Kamke, U.S. Open 2012
Benoit Paire, U.S. Open 2012
In one corner…Tobias Kamke of Germany. In the other…Benoit Paire of France. While we admire the design and lined detail on both shirts, we prefer the contrast of the bright orange against the black pants – the WINNER…Herr Kamke (check out Tobias' style in Lacoste fashion for U.S. Open post!!

Serena vs. Serena

While it may be hard to believe, it appears that both Venus and Serena (at the same time, in the same tournament) have gotten the memo...finally! The sisters looked TERRIFIC at this year’s open, although we are singling out Serena here. While her doubles (left) AND singles (right) outfits appear trendy, bright and comfortable – the WINNER is the SINGLES style, due to its flattering vertical lines. Also, the sleeveless look better features her trimmed down, well-defined guns!

Battle of the “Classics”

Lastly we have two of our favorite tennis fashion plates: Maria Kirilenko and Anna Ivanovic in a battle of the “classics.” Both girls sport simple yet very pretty tennis dresses paired with bright white visors, shoes and wristbands (check out their styles in the post dedicated to Adidas fashion at U.S. Open). Both are so fetching that we simply cannot choose a winner. Our DECISION: It’s a draw!

Wear This, Not That French Open Edition: Adidas - 2012

There is an art to choosing attractive tennis clothing, especially if playing on rich, red clay! While cut is ALWAYS an important element to good style, there are a few other factors to consider in the selection of a fabulous French Open outfit:

1. Color – After all this time, why can’t some top-seeded players realize that they are being photographed…a LOT! Many continue to choose colors that clash with the clay like bright purples and pinks. The BEST bet for the burnt-orange surface is a complementary sky blue or a light shade of aqua, but make sure to break them up with a neutral short or skirt fashioned in gray or navy blue.

2. Comfort – If a player can’t freely move about the court, the outfit sort of defeats the purpose…literally!

3. Temperature – There is a reason why Bethanie Mattek-Sands is the only player to wear knee socks – they’re HOT (and we don’t mean good-looking). Players should choose clothing that is made to keep the body cool on court.

4. Accessories – Often deemed the best (or in some cases the worst) part of an outfit, accessories can take tennis style from “O. K.” to “OUTSTANDING!”

With all this in mind, here are our recommendations for 2012 French Open Fashion – the Adidas Battle.
WEAR THIS
NOT THAT
This is a no-brainer. While these outfits are very similar, the lines of Miss Ivanovic’s dress are much cleaner and more flattering to the figure.

WEAR THIS
 NOT THAT
Here it is all about the color. Mr. Simon’s color choices (left) are spot on – pale blue with neutral navy and accents that are just a glimmer more orange than the player on the right. Well-played!

French Open 2012 Tennis Fashion. Day 5: Adidas Girls - Ana Ivanovic and Maria Kirilenko

The fifth day of 2012 French Open left behind Maria Kirilenko who was beaten by Czech Klara Zakopalova. And though Ana Ivanovic will still be competing tomorrow, we think it's good time to review what Adidas has presented on women's side.

Ana is wearing a dress similar to the one she wore at Australian Open, but in different color combination (the color resembles Serena Wiliams' dress, though as for me, Serena's dress looked much better).

Maria presented the clothing from Adidas Adipure line which looked really good taking into consideration bright colors that are hot this season and nice cut.

Tennis Players with Panache – Fashionistas of 2011

This was an exciting year for tennis: Novak Djokovic had an amazing run displaying remarkable athleticism, and the end-of-year, 17-match winning streak from Roger Federer had us wondering if he still has something left in the tank. In terms of style, there were a few surprises, but our tried-and-true cast of characters sported the bulk of terrific tennis fashion in 2011.

Our Grand Prize for All-Around Style in the Men’s Category goes to – drumroll please -

Off court and on, Roger is the “picture” of excellent tailoring, seemingly effortless style and good taste. He stands out in subtle shades like gray and navy, but also rocks the red as shown in this on-court ensemble from the 2011 World Tour Finals.

In fact, we have never seen a photo of Roger that we didn’t like. Whether he’s nicely filling out a signature T-shirt and shorts on the practice court or stylishly sporting a Hugo Boss suit, the Fed has arrived as a true fashion icon.

Our Grand Prize for All-Around Style in the Women’s Category goes to…

While always perfectly put together, for some reason, Maria’s style appears to be just a bit more contrived than that of the Fed Express - perhaps it has to do with confidence level. Needless to say, Miss Sharapova continually radiates beauty and charm both on court and off. Her most valuable asset? Her stylist.

Comfortable yet sexy…a WINNING combination!

Our Prize for Best On-Court Style in the Men’s Category goes to…Rafael Nadal!

Nobody, but no BODY, can “bring” the bright color like Rafa Nadal! He’s not too shabby in basic black either, as evidenced by the photo at this year’s Rolex Shanghai Masters.

And speaking of eye-catching outfits, the 2011 Prize for Best On-Court Style in the Women’s Category goes to none other than…Ana Ivanovic! A dark brown mane, pearly white teeth and skin that glows with a little perspiration…Ana was made for styles that feature bold, bright color! Even though her game may lately be a bit lacking, we always look forward to seeing this visually-pleasing and charming young lady!

Fernando Verdasco

We mourn the fact that he and Ana Ivanovic are no longer dating…they would have made such pretty babies!!!

Pretty in pink!!!
