Fashion Battles: 2012 U.S. Open Tennis

The last Grand Slam of a very long season – due to the extra excitement of Olympic tennis – leaves us feeling bittersweet to say the least. The retirement of Kim Clijsters and Andy Roddick will certainly give us less to dish about when it comes to tennis fashion. And there are other reasons we will miss these two memorable phenoms.

In addition to the Aussies, Americans too have adopted “our Kim” as one of our own – we have enjoyed her winning personality and amazing on-court flexibility. And Mister Roddick? Well, in spite of ourselves sometimes, we enjoy his feisty attitude and sharp wit, not to mention that serve…we will miss that serve!

That said, let’s get back to fashion… Bold color seems to be the trend at this year’s open with a favorite being bright pink! With a host of bright colors and patterns, we thought we would make a few comparisons for your amusement. Presenting…

Lacoste vs. Lacoste
Tobias Kamke, U.S. Open 2012
Benoit Paire, U.S. Open 2012
In one corner…Tobias Kamke of Germany. In the other…Benoit Paire of France. While we admire the design and lined detail on both shirts, we prefer the contrast of the bright orange against the black pants – the WINNER…Herr Kamke (check out Tobias' style in Lacoste fashion for U.S. Open post!!

Serena vs. Serena

While it may be hard to believe, it appears that both Venus and Serena (at the same time, in the same tournament) have gotten the memo...finally! The sisters looked TERRIFIC at this year’s open, although we are singling out Serena here. While her doubles (left) AND singles (right) outfits appear trendy, bright and comfortable – the WINNER is the SINGLES style, due to its flattering vertical lines. Also, the sleeveless look better features her trimmed down, well-defined guns!

Battle of the “Classics”

Lastly we have two of our favorite tennis fashion plates: Maria Kirilenko and Anna Ivanovic in a battle of the “classics.” Both girls sport simple yet very pretty tennis dresses paired with bright white visors, shoes and wristbands (check out their styles in the post dedicated to Adidas fashion at U.S. Open). Both are so fetching that we simply cannot choose a winner. Our DECISION: It’s a draw!

Ana Ivanovic, U.S. Open 2012

US Open 2012 Tennis Fashion. Day 6: Lacoste Fashion with Dominika Cibulkova, Andy Roddick, Tobias Kamke

Day five of the US Open was unfortunate for Dominika Cibulkova who lost to Italian Roberta Vinci in two sets. Since we won't see Dominica again on New York's courts this year, and since Andy Roddick is retiring after this tournament, we think it's time for 2012 US Open Lacoste fashion review.

Top Five Frightful, French Open 2012 Flops

The 2012 French Open is drawing to a close, and while most of the styles this year were tame if not a little boring, we can’t seem to make it through any Grand Slam without a few fashion disasters. We dutifully award our picks for the Top Five Frightful, French Open Flops to the following deserving candidates:

The not-so-surprising Grand Prize goes to (drum roll, please)… Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Congratulations Bethanie, you have outdone yourself (and every other player EVER for that matter)! If we didn’t know any better, it would appear as if:

1. You lost your luggage and had to settle for thrift-store freebies, or
2. You are trying to make some kind of rebellious, in-your-face statement.

We just cannot imagine that anyone would actually think this outfit was attractive.

2nd Prize is awarded to…Arnaud Clement

While we will miss his on-court exuberance, there is only ONE word to describe Arnaud Clement’s fashion sense: schizophrenic! At this year’s Open, he sported a mish mosh of ill-fitting, color-clashing outfits and accessories…yikes!

3rd Prize – Kevin Anderson

To the left we have a photo of the burnt orange, French clay. The pairing of this with Mr. Anderson’s shirt (shown below) is a recipe for fried retinas! Five words, Kevin: Real men don’t wear fuchsia.

And speaking of clay-clashing colors…while we are fond of the capris, we do not love them with THIS bright tennis outfit. If this color must be worn on clay, we recommend it for the head and wrist bands and in small accents on a bright white, less form-fitting shirt. 4th Prize – Petra Kvitova

And finally, 5th Prize goes to Svetlana Kuznetsova – for a combination of fashion faux pas: the cut and colors in this outfit do nothing for Miss Kuznetsova’s figure or skin tone. And the hairstyle? Well, we respectfully suggest a hat.

French Open 2012 Tennis Fashion. Day 2: Cibulkova and Cornet - Lacoste Women's Fashion

Since we've already touched Lacoste fashion at French Open speaking about Andy Roddick's 2012 French Open fashion, we would like to continue it and show what Lacoste presented on the women's side.
Alize Cornet, Dominica Cibulkova; French Open 2012
I really liked Alize Cornet's Lacoste dress in blue, which was also worn by Dominica Cibulkova, but in orange-red color. Orange-red seems to be one of the trendy tennis colors this season, as most of major brands use it in their collections, including Nike and adidas. Not sure if it's red clay inspiration or just a coincidence, but to my mind, it's too much red and orange and it'd be better to dress into something else when you are playing on a red clay anyway... The dress itself is classy and cute, and is also available in white (may be we'll see it once again on Wimbledon).

French Open 2012 Tennis Fashion. Day 1: Andy Roddick's Outfit

French Open 2012 has started an we, at Trendy Tennis, are all ready for and excited about our daily fashion reviews! Actually we wanted to start with one of the most outrageous tennis fashionistas Venus Williams (who surprisingly changed her tennis fashion style), but the first day had some unexpected surprises in store, so we have to direct out attention to the guy whom we won't see again on this year's Paris courts...

The first day of 2012 French Open was shocking for all American fans. Andy Roddick lost in the first round to Nicolas Mahut of France. Andy hasn't been playing well lately and we haven't seen him much on the courts... Hopefully it doesn't mean that Andy's career is coming to the end... Anyway, we'd like to present Andy's outfit created by Lacoste - as always classy.

Australian Open 2012 Tennis Fashion Day 4: Andy Roddick and John Isner - Lacoste Fashion

Lacoste lost (or let go?) some of the players who represented the brand. Samantha Stosur signed with Asics, and Wawrinka went to Yonex. However Lacoste replenished its American representation adding John Isner to its main ambassador Andy Roddick.

It was unexpected that Andy retired in a match with Lleyton Hewitt, but though he was not successful in this year's Australian Open, he released a collection with Lacoste, and the clothing we saw Andy in was actually from Lacoste Andy Roddick signature collection.
